Today the band consists of songwriters Rory and Calum Macdonald, along with Skye guitarist Malcolm Jones and drummer Bayne from St Andrews. Lead vocalist, Nova Scotian Bruce Guthro, joined in 1998 followed by keyboard player Brian Hurren from Falkirk.

In 1973, brothers Calum and Rory Macdonald formed the Scottish folk rock group Runrig in Portree, Isle of Skye. The group gained popularity in the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Germany and was renowned for fusing original Gaelic music with a rock style to represent the Gaelic culture.
Calum Macdonald, Rory Macdonald, and their friend, accordionist Blair Douglas, formed the "Run Rig Dance Band" in 1973 as a trio under the name "Runrig." At Glasgow's Kelvin Hall, the lineup performed for the first time. As a member of the
